High School Graduates Enrolling in Postsecondary Institutions
Postsecondary enrollment data is collected for students graduating from an Elkhart County high school for the 12 months following high school graduation. Students are considered enrolled if they are enrolled at a postsecondary institution as a degree-seeking or certificate-seeking undergraduate for at least one semester in the year following high school.

Postsecondary education has been linked to many lifetime benefits including higher income, greater cognitive ability, stronger likelihood of working in a job that matches interests, positive health outcomes and civic engagement. Research has demonstrated that communities also experience economic benefits from increased years of schooling among employed workers. Even just one year of postsecondary can bring benefit to both individuals and communities, but the benefits increase for those who earn a degree. Postsecondary enrollment is highly influenced by a students’ experiences and opportunities in high school – including coursework, diploma type, and the support students receive in navigating the college and financial aid application processes. Postsecondary enrollment is also influenced by students’ family backgrounds, with students who are the first generation in their family to attend college often facing additional enrollment barriers. Examining data on actual enrollment is critical given the threat of “summer melt,” particularly for low-income students, in which students leave high school intending and planning to attend postsecondary but encounter obstacles that ultimately keep them from attending in the fall.
