Poverty Rate by Attainment
The United States Census Bureau tracks data on educational attainment, which is defined as the highest level of education that an individual completes. In addition to looking at the overall percentages of the population at each level of educational attainment, data is also provided on the relationship between educational attainment and economic outcomes. This indicator looks at the relationship between attainment and poverty rate.
Poverty status in the past 12 months by educational attainment, of population for whom poverty status is determined, as reported at the county and state level by American Community Survey data tables, collected by Horizon Education Alliance, 2012-2024 (5-year estimates only)
The data for this indicator demonstrate the effects of educational level on poverty rate. The proportion of the population below the poverty level is much higher for adults with no high school diploma as compared to other educational levels. These data reinforce the critical importance of a high school diploma and demonstrate the benefits of additional levels of education for economic well-being.
