School Attendance
School attendance data is calculated as the percentage of students who attend at least 94% of instructional days during the academic year (or 170 days during a 180 day school year). Attending school is critical for student learning and impacts outcomes across all grade levels.

Student attendance has been shown to be a powerful predictor of student achievement. Research shows that absenteeism beginning as early as kindergarten can negatively impact students’ ability to read at third-grade and to graduate from high school. Student absenteeism for any reason, whether excused or unexcused, leads to lost learning opportunities. As such, there has been increased emphasis on measuring the attendance of individual students, counting both excused and unexcused absences, rather than looking at truancy (unexcused absences) or overall attendance rates of schools. Many circumstances can cause students to miss school, absenteeism can be an indicator of many other issues facing students and families, such as physical and mental health challenges, food insecurity, and family well-being. Particularly in the later years, school attendance can also be connected to a student’s level of engagement and interest in school.

The Indiana Department of Education’s Graduates Prepared to Succeed Dashboard includes comprehensive data on student attendance for the state and for all school districts, disaggregated by demographic groups.
The Elkhart County Child Dashboard tracks chronic absenteeism for Elkhart County, which is defined as the percentage of students who miss 10% of enrolled days (18 days in a 180-day school year).
